Signs and symptoms
Pancreatic cancer symptoms can be classified into three categories: early symptoms, late symptoms, possible symptoms and important signs.
A) Early symptoms

Early pancreatic cancer symptoms are non-specific and easy to miss with the symptoms of many other illnesses. In addition, these symptoms are not usually present; it is therefore called a ‘silent’ disease.
Early symptoms, if present, include the following:
- Diffused abdominal pain
- Bloating
- Flatulence
- General malaise
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Constipation
B) Late symptoms
Late symptoms usually include:
- Localised abdominal pain radiates to the back
- Weight loss due to loss of appetite
- Jaundice: a yellowing of the skin and eyes caused by the build-up of bilirubin in the blood
C) Possible presentations
Later stages may include the following complications:
- Acute and chronic pancreatitis
- Upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage
- Pyrexia
D) Important signs
Later stages of pancreatic cancer may include one or some of the following signs:
- Upper abdominal mass
- Icterus
- Hepatomegaly
- Splenomegaly
- Palpable gallbladder (Courvoisier’s sign)
- Periumbilical nodules (Sister Mary Joseph’s node)
- Ascites
- Peripheral odema
